Formalistic Approach
An approach focusing on the words on the page and the six basic elements of fiction to analyze literature.
Plot
The sequence of events in a story in the order that they occur, revolving around a problem or conflict.
Conflict
The opposition of two forces, often internal (person vs. self) or external (person vs. person, person vs. society, etc.).
Exposition
Introduces the reader to the main characters, the setting, and hints at the conflict.
Inciting Force
Incident or action that ignites the conflict and begins the rising action.
Crisis
The primary conflict is fully exposed.
Climax
The most exciting event in the story.
Falling Action
The winding down of the story after the climax.
Resolution
The resolution of the conflict.
