What is refraction?
The bending of light as if passed from one medium to another.
Examples of refraction:
Through windows
Sun through the atmosphere
Through water
Laws of refraction:
The incident ray, the normal and the refracted ray all lie on the same plane at the point of incidence.
Sin i/sin r =n where n is a constant known as the refractive index.
Snells law of refraction:
Sin i is proportionate to sin r
N> i (light bends towards the normal)
What is the refractive index of a medium?
the ratio of the sin of the angle of incidence to the sin of the angle of refraction when light travels from a vacuum into that medium.
ie: when light goes from less dense to more dense
Refractive index between two media:
Is the ratio of the sin of the angle of incidence to the sin of the angle of refraction when light travels from one of those media to another.
The order of which the light passes through the media matters.
Formula : xNy = 1/yNx
xNy is when light travels from x to y
yNx is when light travels from y to x
