What are the five domains of language?
semantics, pragmatics, syntax, morphology, and phonology
What is semantics?
content, vocabulary
What is pragmatics?
social skills, interactions with others
What is syntax?
sentence structure, grammar
What is morphology?
structure of words, free and bound morpheme
What is phonology?
individual sounds, phonemes
What is receptive vs expressive language?
receptive language is the ability to understand/comprehend language, and expressive language is the ability to use language to communicate
What are brown's stages? why are they important?
A set of developmental stages for children. Give a general timeline for continuous development in each domain of language (morphology, phonology, syntax, pragmatics, and semantics). and can be used to see if a child is developing on time or delayed.
What are the steps of the speech chain?
1) speaker sorts through thoughts and decides what to say, 2) message put into language form,
3) neural impulses sent to speech mechanism to trigger movements,
4) movements of speech produce sound waves,
5) sound waves are picked up by listener's hearing mechanism,
6) listeners brain processes sound and understands message.
What are stimulation techniques/caregiver actions during book sharing activity in stage four?
pointing to words, exaggerated facial expressions, change in pitch, asking child to identify letters, words, or colors
What is fast mapping vs slow mapping?
fast mapping are quick learned word associations, while slow mapping is gradual process that requires experience with word in multiple contexts
What is conversation repair?
when the speaker alters or revises their message when the listener is not able to understand
horizontal vs vertical expansion
horizontal expansion adds semantic info to word (more examples) while vertical expansion adds a deeper meaning
What are the three ways we define words?
operational definitions, semantic definitions, and metalinguistic definitions
What is semantic definitions?
dictionary definitions that give the category a word belongs to and characteristics
What is an example of semantic definition?
a dog is furry, has four legs, and can be kept as a pet
What is metalinguistic definitions?
ability to think about a words deeper meaning
What is an example of a metalinguistic definition?
"a true friend is someone you trust, not just someone you know"
What is operational definition?
the defining of a word by what it does
What is an example of an operational definition?
a pencil is used to write or draw
