Traditional Methods of Separating Mixtures
Simple, non-mechanized techniques—hand picking, threshing, and winnowing—used mainly in agriculture and households to separate solid-solid mixtures.
Hand Picking
A manual separation technique where visibly different and often small-quantity impurities are removed from a mixture by hand.
Threshing
The process of separating grains from their stalks or husks, traditionally by beating harvested crops against a hard surface; now often performed with threshing machines.
Winnowing
A method that uses wind or airflow to separate lighter particles, such as husks, from heavier ones like grains after threshing.
Physical Properties in Separation
Characteristics such as size, weight, and visibility relied upon by hand picking, threshing, and winnowing to differentiate mixture components.
