Scatter Plot
A graph with points plotted to show a possible relationship between two sets of data.
Correlation
Describes a relationship between two data sets. The correlation can help you analyze trends and make predictions
Positive correlation
Fitting a positive slope. The data points create an uphill pattern from left to right. This means as the value of x increases so does the value of y. (3, 6), (5, 8), (7, 10), (9, 12) ...
Negative correlation
Fitting a negative slope. The data points create a downhill pattern. This means as the value of x increases, the value of y decreases. (3, 6), (5, 3), (7, 1), (9, -1)
No correlation
There is no relationship between the data sets
Line of Best Fit
The line that comes closest to all of the points in the data set. (Best guess line)
Bivariate data
Data with two variables, or pairs of numerical observations.
Interpret
explain the meaning of (information, words, or actions).
Model
a representation of an object or event that can be studied to understand the real object or event
initial value
the starting amount or y-intercept of the graph
Linear
straight line
Non-Linear
A relationship which does not create a straight line.
Slope
the steepness of a line on a graph, equal to its vertical change divided by its horizontal change
rate of change
A rate that describes how one quantity changes in relation to another
Quantitative Variable
takes numerical values for which it makes sense to find an average
Clustering
the data in each subset (ideally) share some common trait - often similarity or proximity for some defined distance measure.
Outlier
A value that "lies outside" (is much smaller or larger than) most of the other values in a set of data.
