Aquinas says:
“ it is lawful to kill an evil doer in so far as it is directed to the welfare of the whole community”
“ Now the care of the common God is trusted to a persons of rank having public authority: therefore they alone and not private individuals, can lovely put evildoers to death”
It is okay to carry out the death penalty if it is for the benefit of the whole community - but has to be done to those who are responsible for the community
Article 2267 of the catechism of the Catholic Church states
It is permissible, but only when any other means to prevent reoffending is not possible
In theory capital punishment: yes
In practice capital punishment: probably no (as everyone deserves a chance to develop their relationship with God)
