During the hottest part of the day, what do C4 plants do?
Partially close their stomata to reduce transpiration (water loss in plants)
What are some examples of C4 plants?
Corn and sugar cane
What happens in C4 plants?
O2 competes with CO2 for RuBP carboxylase (Rubisco) which is a problem because the stomata are partially closed and can’t escape the leaf
How do C4 plants fix this problem?
They fix CO2 into a C4 compound in separate bundle sheath cells which are sheltered from leaf air space in the mesophyll tissue
Compared to C3 plants how much water do C4 plants lose when producing the same amount of carbohydrate?
About half as much of C3 plants
What can we say about C4 plants?
They are much more efficient than C3 plants
