Consubstantiation

Luther reduced the number of sacraments to two, namely Baptism and Eucharist, which he considered the only ones clearly warranted in Scripture.

Exsurge Domine

A papal document that condemned 41 of Luther's propositions and demanded their destruction.

Bloody Mary

Nickname for Mary Tudor, based on her persecution of heretics during her reign.

Anglican Settlement

A religious framework aimed at unifying both Catholic and Protestant factions within the Anglican Church.

Gunpowder Plot

An attempt led by Guy Fawkes to blow up the Parliament in 1605 to assassinate King James I.

Pope Paul III

The pope who led the reform necessary in the Catholic Church, known as 'Cardinal Petticoat' due to the scandal surrounding his family.
