Combustion
Can either be complete (CO2 + H2O)
or incomplete (CO/C + H2O)
Radical substitution
Alkane —> haloalkane
reagents: Halogen and UV(forms radicals)
Initiation
HOMOLYTIC FISSION: breaking halogen covalent bonds.
Cl2 —> (UV) 2CL°
Propagation
Radical attacks alkane to form a new radical. Reacts to form original radical.
E.g
Cl° + CH4 —> CH3° + HCL
CH3° + Cl2 —> CH3Cl + Cl°
Termination
Killing radicals by reacting with eachother.
1) 2Cl° —> Cl2
2) Cl° + CH3° —> CH3Cl
3) 2CH3° —> C2H6
