static and kinetic friction

kinetic friction

if two system are in contact and moving relative to one another -- kinetic friction

statics friction

if two system are in contact and stationary relative to one another -- static friction

static friction is not

without limits -- it has a maximum possible value

\-if you push with a force greater than the maximum, you overcome static friction and the crate will begin to slide
