balkans. austria-hungary had annexed bosnia. lots of bosnians wanted independence and had support from serbia. archduke franz ferdinand from austria was killed while visiting sarajevo - and a group of bosnian nationalists and the black hand were responsible

trench warfare (really slow, dangerous, not sanitary, lots of sickness)
to break stalemates - use chemical weapons (tear and poisonous gases) and tanks

machine guns made advancing hard

What was the Schleiffen Plan? did it work and how?

german plan to invade and conquer france quickly before going back to fight russia
It did not work bc since germany goes through belgium, britain, and france, germany gets slowed down
russia gets their troops together much faster than expected

war in france, super long and blood

2 mil men involved

germans wanted it to be a battle of attrition and bleed the french army
in the end, around the same # of casualties in germany and france

most americans did not want to get involved in fights that involved europe
american companies saw the war as an opportunity to sell goods to BOTH germany and britain

u boat sank british ship that had americans on it, mad ppl mad
Germany told mexico that if they and us had a war, mexico would get land in the US from germany after they conquered it
US warships started helping the british fight against germany and their u boat stuff

heavily blames germany
says they could only have 100,000 soldiers, no tanks, no airforce, no submarines, no battleships
germany had to give up all overseas colonies and they gave up an area to france called alsace-lorraine
germany accepted a clause that basically said that they were responsible for starting the war

Germany’s reaction to the Treaty of Versailles?

thought it was super unfair and losses were too severe and a diktak - dictated peace

germans were promised the treaty was based on the 14 points but it wasn’t
thought the war guilt clause (everything blamed on germany) was unjust

they thought the german economy would be bad and it did end up being bad
