• VP during Lincoln, became president after Lincoln assassination (1865)

• Democrat, former TN military governor

President Johnson’s policies/ ideals

• Really racist, vetoes everything suggesting black equality

• never against slavery, but led efforts to abolish slavery in TN, unionist

• republicans added him as part of Lincoln’s campaign to help win democrat’s votes
