What is “appeal to authority”?
Just because a person is an expert in one field does not mean that they are an expert in another, typically celebrities and politicians
How to spot an expert?
Education and training from reputable institutions
Experience making reliable judgments about these issues
Still these individuals should not be considered infallible
Genetic fallacy
Arguing that a claim is true or false based solely on its origin or source
Fallacy of composition
Just because something is true of the part, does not mean that it is true of the whole
Fallacy of Division
Occurs when someone argues that what is true of the whole must be true of the parts
Appeal to the Person
Rejecting a claim by criticizing the person who makes it rather than the claim itself
Bandwagon/ Appeal to popularity
Arguing that a claim must be true because a substantial number of people believe it. Appeal to the masses.
Appeal to Minority
Rejecting anything that is accepted by the majority of people simply because it is accepted by the majority of people
Appeal to tradition
Arguing that a claim must be true because of a tradition
Appeal to ignoranace
to believe that a claimm is true becuase no one has proved it false
