A tear at the junction between the esophagus and the stomach that causes severe bleeding and can be fatal
Risk factors
Alcoholism and eating disorders are the primary risk factors; in women, may be associated with severe vomiting during pregnancy
Principal symptom
Vomiting
Severe cases
May present with signs and symptoms of shock, upper abdominal pain, hematemesis, and melena
