Valence Electrons
The electrons in an atom’s outermost shell.
Isoelectronic
When an atom has the same electron configuration as a noble gas.
Covalent Bond
A bond that consists of two shared electrons.
Octet Rule
The concept that most atoms want 8 electrons in their outermost shell.
Ionic Bonding
When atoms gain or lose electrons to achieve a noble gas configuration.
Covalent Bonding
A type of bonding where atoms share electrons.
Charge of Ions
Atoms gain or lose electrons to become charged; losing electrons gives a positive charge.
Trigonal Bipyramidal Shape
A molecular shape that has a total of six atoms.
VSEPR Theory
Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion theory used to predict molecular geometry.
Malleable
The property of metals that allows them to be hammered into different shapes.
Polar Covalent Bond
A type of bond where electrons are shared unequally.
Structural Formula
A representation of a molecule that shows how the atoms are arranged.
Non-polar Molecule
A molecule that does not have a net dipole moment due to symmetry.
Trigonal Planar Shape
A molecular shape where three atoms are bonded to a central atom and are in the same plane.
Double Covalent Bond
A bond that consists of four shared electrons.
