Venous Drainage

The process by which veins return deoxygenated blood from various tissues in the body back to the heart.

Internal Jugular Vein

Drains blood from the brain and most other tissues of the head and neck.

External Jugular Vein

Drains a small part of the extracranial structures in the head and neck.

Facial Vein

Drains the face and empties into the internal jugular vein.

Anastomosis

The connection between two structures, such as veins, allowing for collateral circulation.

Lingual Veins

Veins that drain the tongue and may merge to form a single vessel or drain separately into larger vessels.

Pterygoid Plexus of Veins

A network of veins located around the lateral pterygoid muscle that drains deep facial structures.

Retromandibular Vein

Formed from the merger of the superficial temporal vein and maxillary vein; contributes to the formation of the external jugular vein.

Cavernous Sinus

Dural sinuses located on either side of the sella turcica, allowing for venous drainage from the brain.

Thrombus

A blood clot that forms within a blood vessel, potentially obstructing blood flow.

Embolus

A particle that travels through the bloodstream and can cause blockage in a vessel.

Atherosclerosis

A condition where arterial plaque builds up in the walls of arteries, potentially leading to blockages.

Superior Labial Vein

Drains blood from the upper lip into the facial vein.

Inferior Labial Vein

Drains blood from the lower lip into the facial vein.

Mental Branches (Inferior Alveolar Vein)

Drains blood from the chin area and communicates with the facial vein.

Hemorrhage

Severe bleeding that can occur when blood escapes into surrounding tissue without clotting.

The method of delivering drugs under the tongue for rapid systemic absorption.

Bacteremia

The presence of bacteria in the bloodstream, which can occur during dental procedures.

Anterior Jugular Vein

Drains into the external jugular vein and typically originates near the chin.
