Body Alignment
Positioning that promotes proper body functioning.
Immobility
Loss of function or movement.
Mobility
Ability to move physically.
Lift/Draw Sheet
Light blanket/sheet used to move a patient in bed.
Log Roll
Moving a person as a unit without disturbing alignment.
Mechanical Lift
Equipment used to move or weigh a person.
Shearing of Skin
Rubbing when skin moves one way and bone stays fixed.
Affected Side
Side involved by disease or injury.
Unaffected Side
Side not involved in illness or injury.
Fowler’s Position
Back-lying, head elevated 45–60°.
High-Fowler’s
Head elevated 90°.
Semi-Fowler’s
Head & shoulders raised 30–45°, pillow under knees.
Supine
Lying flat on back.
Prone
Lying on abdomen.
Sims’ Position
Lying on left side.
Lateral Position
Lying on right side.
Repositioning Guidelines
Reposition residents at least every 2 hours for comfort and to prevent issues.
Right to Know
Patient's right to know why exams are being done.
Abduction
Movement away from the midline of the body.
Ambulation
Act of walking.
Active ROM
Patient moves independently.
Passive ROM
NA moves joints for the patient.
Active-Assistive ROM
Patient moves with help.
Adaptive Devices
Help with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs).
Fall Injury Prevention
Maintain strong grip on gait belt and guide patient gently to the floor.
Rehabilitation
Restores highest possible function.
Restorative Care
Maintains function and increases independence.
