Valence Electrons
Electrons in the outermost shell of an atom that determine its chemical behavior.
Electron Dot Symbol
A representation of valence electrons around an element's symbol, using dots.
Duet Rule
Atoms are most stable with two electrons in their outermost shell.
Octet Rule
Atoms are most stable with eight electrons in their outermost shell.
Noble Gases
Elements that have a complete outer shell of electrons and are very stable.
Cation
A positively charged ion formed when an atom loses electrons.
Anion
A negatively charged ion formed when an atom gains electrons.
Lewis Dot Structure
A diagram that shows the bonding between atoms and the lone pairs of electrons in a molecule.
Stability of Atoms
Atoms are most stable when they achieve a full outer shell of electrons, either by losing or gaining electrons.
