Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space
Compound
Made up of two or more different elements that are combined chemically
Mixture
Combinations of pure substances which retain their individual chemical properties
Element
Pure substance that can't be broken down by chemical or physical means
Periodic Table
Organization of the elements into rows and columns based on similar properties
States of Matter
Physical forms which matter exists naturally in
Physical Property
Characteristic of matter that are observable or measurable without changing composition
Chemical Properties
Ability or inability of a substance to combine with or change into one or more other substances
Homogeneous
Referring to a mixture with constant composition throughout
Heterogeneous
Referring to a mixture that does not blend smoothly throughout and in which the individual substances remain distinct
Physical Change
changes which alter a substance but not its composition
Chemical Change
Change of one or more substances into new susbtances
Distillation
Separating homogeneous mixtures based on differences in the boiling points of the substances involved
Filtration
Usage of a porous barrier to separate a solid from a liquid in heterogenous mixtures
Sublimation
Process during which a solid changes to vapor without going through the liquid phase
Chromatography
Separation of a mixture dissolved in a gas or liquid based on ability of each component to travel or to be drawn across the surface of a fixed substrate.
Solution
Another word for homogenous mixtures
Metric System
a system for mathematical units used for measuring various quantities
