Any land with a house on it.
Housing varies in:
-Urban Areas
-Rural Areas
-Residential Areas
Housing in Urban Areas
Situated very close to each other
Example: Apartment buildings
Housing in Rural Areas
Situated very far apart from each other
Housing in Residential Areas
Mix of different housing types
E.g. Single, family, townhouses, apartment buildings
COMMERCIAL
Any land used for businesses
E.g. grocery stores, clothing stores, home goods, pharmacies and restaurants
Before there were many little stores, which have now been replaced by big box stores
—Big box stores – big companies like Walmart; made it hard for tinier stores to succeed
INDUSTRIAL
Land that is used for manufacturing, processing, or storing raw materials
Can cause any environmental impacts (e.g. air, soil, and groundwater quality)

INSTITUTIONAL
Land used for community services
Schools, hospitals/emergency services, religious buildings/churches, libraries, sports arenas, government offices
Located all throughout the community so that they can be easily accessible
AGRICULTURE
Any land used for growing crops and livestock
E.g. ranches, farms, pastures
Needs a lot of space for plants to grow
For urban areas, due to the lack of space, they would have community gardens.
TRANSPORTATION
Consists of roads and railways, and other physical supports of a transportation system
Roads and parking lots take up 1/3 or area of cities in North America
PARKS AND GREEN SPACE
Usually located around cities and towns
Urban planners include green spaces in cities to move residential areas further away from the noise of industries or traffic
