Matter
All the material around us, made up of small parts called molecules.
Solid
Matter that keeps its shape and does not flow, with particles packed tightly together that only vibrate slightly.
Liquid
Matter that fills the container it's poured into and takes its shape, with particles that move more than solids' but not far from each other.
Gas
Matter that can fill any container completely, with molecules that move around a lot and are far apart.
States of matter
The different conditions in which matter can be found, such as solid, liquid, or gas.
Changes of state
When matter changes from one state to another. This happens when particles gain energy (with heat) or lose energy (cooling).
Heating
Gives particles more energy, allowing them to move more and undergo a change of state.
Melt
A change of state from a solid to a liquid.
Evaporate
A change of state from a liquid to a gas.
Cooling
Takes energy away from particles, causing a change of state.
Freeze
A change of state from a liquid to a solid.
Condensation
A change of state from a gas to a liquid.
Molecular characteristics
Properties of matter based on how its small parts (molecules or particles) are packed and move.
Water cycle
Shows how water moves between the land, the sea, and the clouds.
