Knee Joint
The largest surface area articulation in the human body.
Fibula
The bone lateral to the tibia that does not articulate at the knee or bear weight.
Medial and Lateral Condyles
Superior protrusions on the tibia that articulate with the condyles of the femur to form the knee joint.
Intercondyloid Eminence
A skeletal projection located between the condyles of the tibia.
Intercondyloid Tubercles
Skeletal projections adjacent to the intercondyloid eminence on the tibia.
Anterior Intercondyloid Fossa
A skeletal depression anterior to the intercondyloid tubercles on the tibia.
Posterior Intercondyloid Fossa
A skeletal depression posterior to the intercondyloid tubercles on the tibia.
Tuberosity of the Tibia
An irregular surfaced prominence located inferior to the condyles on the anterior side of the tibia.
Three borders of the tibia
Anterior, lateral, and medial
Lateral Border of the Tibia
Also known as the interosseous crest.
Three surfaces of the tibia
Medial, posterior, and lateral
Fibular Notch
Articulation point for the lateral malleolus of the fibula, located on the lateral border of the distal end of the tibia.
Patellofemoral Joint
A gliding joint that slides up and down the posterior surface of the patella and condyles of the femur.
Quadriceps Tendon
Tendon linking the distal end of the quadriceps muscle group to the patella, continuous with the patellar ligament.
Patellar Ligament
Ligament continuous inferiorly with the quadriceps tendon serving as the distal attachment for the quadriceps muscle group on the tibial tuberosity of the tibia.
Medial and Lateral Reticula
Fibrous attachments running from the patella posteriorly to the distal end of the femur and attaching to the medial and lateral epicondyles.
Lateral Collateral Ligament
Attaches to the lateral epicondyle of the femur and head of fibula. Checks hyperextension, rotation, adduction.
Medial Collateral Ligament
Attaches to the medial epicondyle of the femur to the medial aspect of the tibia. Checks hyperextension, rotation, abduction.
Anterior and Posterior Cruciate Ligaments
Ligaments that check rotation and hyperextension of the knee joint.
What are the tibiofemoral and patellofemoral articulations classified as?
Arthrodial joints.
What is the feature of the joint capsule for the tibiofemoral and patellofemoral articulations?
The tibiofemoral and patellofemoral articulations are encased in a common joint capsule.
Which bursae minimize friction at the patellofemoral joint?
The gastrocnemius, suprapatellar, and intrapatellar bursae
Tibial facet
a rounded facet on the superior-medial surface of the fibula that articulates with the fibular facet on the lateral aspect of the tibial head
Lateral malleolus
the bony prominence on the outer side of the ankle, formed by the fibula, that provides stability and support.
Articular capsule of the ankle
The fibrous envelope surrounding the ankle joint, consisting of ligaments that connect the bones and protect the joint.
Medial ligament of the ankle
a ligament located on the inner side of the ankle that provides stability by connecting the tibia to the bones of the foot.
How many bones in the foot
26
Longitudinal arch of the foot
Arch that runs from the heads of the metatarsals to the calcaneus
Transverse arch
Side-to-side concavity on the underside of the foot formed by the metatarsals and three cuneiforms
