Kingdom Plantae
A large kingdom that comprises varied groups of organisms, containing over 300,000 catalogued species of plants, primarily seed plants.
Alternation of Generations
A life cycle pattern in which an organism has both haploid and diploid multicellular stages.
Gametophyte
The multicellular haploid form in the alternation of generations, which produces gametes by mitosis.
Sporophyte
The multicellular diploid form in the alternation of generations, which develops from the fertilization of gametes.
Bryophytes
Non-vascular plants including liverworts, hornworts, and mosses, which thrive in damp habitats.
Vascular Plants
Plants that contain vascular tissue, which includes xylem and phloem, for the transport of water, minerals, sugars, and proteins.
Gymnosperms
Seed plants that produce 'naked seeds' and include conifers, cycads, ginkgophytes, and gnetophytes.
Angiosperms
Flowering plants that are characterized by the production of flowers and fruits.
Chlorophytes
A major group of green algae distinguished from charophytes based on important cellular differences.
Charophytes
Green algae that are the closest relatives to land plants and are included in the group Streptophyta.
