Three phases of a thunderstorm

Developing: A rising column of air (updraft) pushes a cumulus cloud upward.

Mature: The storm is fully formed, with strong updrafts and downdrafts. This is the most dangerous stage, when tornadoes, large hail, damaging winds, and flash flooding may occur.

Dissipating: The downdraft cuts off the updraft, and the storm weakens and breaks apart. Light rain and weak outflow winds may remain for a while.
