Depresses corner of mouth.

Closes mouth, puckers/rounds lips; Major function is for lip seal.

Depresses mandible and corner of mouth.

Positioning/movement of the tongue

Genioglossus

Largest & strongest extrinsic tongue muscle; Contraction protrudes the tongue, depresses, form midline groove.

Palatoglossus

Contraction elevates back of tongue

Styloglossus

Elevates & retracts tongue; Contraction pulls tongue up and back

Hyoglossus

Contraction depresses and pulls tongue backward

Superior Longitudinal Muscle

Elevates tip of tongue, creates concave dorsum

Inferior Longitudinal Muscle

Pulls tip down and retracts the tongue, creates convex dorsum

Transverse Muscle

Elongates, narrows tongue

Vertical Muscle

Pulls tongue down

Temporalis

Raises and retracts mandible

Masseter

Raises mandible against maxilla.

Internal (medial) pterygoid

Raises and protrudes mandible.

Digastric

Raises hyoid and depresses mandible, retracts

Mylohyoid

Elevates hyoid (and laryngeal structures) and tongue, retracts

Geniohyoid

Pulls hyoid up and forward

External (lateral) pterygoid

Depresses mandible, draws mandible forward and sideways

Levator veli palatini

Raises soft palate to meet posterior pharyngeal wall

Tensor veli palatini

Tenses soft palate; opens Eustachian tube during swallow

Uvula

Raises and shortens uvula

Palatoglossus

Raises posterior portion of tongue/depresses velum

Palatopharyngeus

Depresses velum

Cricopharyngeus
