Covalent Bonding
A type of bonding that involves the sharing of electrons between nonmetals.
Single Covalent Bond
A bond formed by the sharing of one pair of electrons (two electrons) between two atoms.
Double Covalent Bond
A bond formed by the sharing of two pairs of electrons (four electrons) between two atoms.
Triple Covalent Bond
A bond formed by the sharing of three pairs of electrons (six electrons) between two atoms.
Molecular Formula
The chemical formula that indicates the exact makeup of one molecule of a compound.
Properties of Molecular Compounds
Molecular compounds tend to have lower melting and boiling points, and exist as solids, liquids, or gases at room temperature; they are non-conductors in any state.
Structural Formula
A graphical representation of the molecular structure showing how atoms are arranged and which atoms are bonded to each other.
Dot Formula
A representation of a molecule using dots to show the arrangement of electrons, particularly the valence electrons.
Shared Electrons
Electrons that are involved in bonding between two atoms.
Unshared Electrons
Electrons that are not involved in bonding and belong to a single atom.
