Porter
Appears just after the murder of King Duncan. He serves as a comedic relief, breaking the intense tension with a humorous monologue about being the gatekeeper of hell.
Macduff
A foil to Macbeth and ultimately becoming his nemesis. He is the Thane of Fife and one of the first to suspect Macbeth of treachery.
Malcolm
The eldest son of King Duncan and the rightful heir to the Scottish throne. Plays a vital role in Macbeth as a symbol of justice and the return to order.
Donalbain
King Duncan’s younger son and Malcolm’s brother.
Duncan
The king of Scotland at the start of the story. Noble king and respected ruler, but his trust in others leads to his downfall.

Goddess of witchcraft and the leader of the three witches.
Lennox
Noble man who starts off loyal to Macbeth but gradually becomes suspicious and critical of his rule.
Lady Macbeth
One of the most complex character. She is Macbeth’s wife that is, she is the driving force of Macbeth’s ambition to becoming king.
Banquo
Fellow soldier and a friend of Macbeth. Banquo serves as a full to Macbeth, where Macbeth gives in to ambition and prophecy, Banquo remains noble and honourable.
Ross
Scottish nobleman who acts as a messenger, observer and political figure throughout. Though not deeply developed, his shifting alliances reflect the chaos and confusion of Scotland under Macbeth’s rule.
Lady Macduff
Wife of Macduff, she highlights the innocent victims of Macbeth’s cruelty and the human cost of his tyranny.
Fleance
Banquo’s son, dodges Macbeth’s murder attempt
