What is an authoritarian personality?
Someone who shows extreme respect and submissiveness to authority and are likely to obey. They see other groups as inferior. This is usually do to harsh upbringing.
How is authoritarian personality measured?
With the F-Scale.
Who researched authoritarian personality and developed the F-Scale?
Adorno
Adorno's 1950 research
- studied 2000 middle class white americans
- found those who scored high on the F-Scale identified with strong people and disliked weak people
- showed servility to those of high status
- viewed everything as black and white
Strengths
+ Research support from Milgram - obedient ppts scored high on F-Scale
Limitations
- Milgram's obedient participants lacked many other traits of authoritarian personality
- Limited explanation - cannot explain obedience in a majority population
- Political bias - only measures personality of right-wing idealogies
