Subsequent Boundaries

Boundary line established after an area has been settled that considers the social and cultural characteristics of the area

Consequent Boundaries

boundary that coincides with a particular cultural divide (such as religion, language, or ethnicity); a.k.a. cultural boundaries

Fortified Boundaries

the creation of walls/barriers to either prevent foreigners from getting in, or its citizens from getting out

the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea.

Berlin Wall

A wall separating East and West Berlin built by East Germany in 1961 to keep citizens from escaping to the West

UNCLOS

United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea: a code of maritime law approved by the UN in 1982 that authorizes, among other provisions, territorial waters extending 12 nautical miles from shore and 200 nautical mile wide exclusive economic zones.

Territorial Waters

The area of sea around a country's coast recognized as being under that country's jurisdiction

EEZ

exclusive economic zone, as established in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, a zone of exploration extending 200 nautical miles (370 km) seaward from a coastal state that has exclusive mineral and fishing rights over it.

The High Seas

the portion of the oceans considered common territory, not under any kind of exclusive state jurisdiction

a strategic, narrow waterway between two larger bodies of water

South China Sea

a tropical arm of the Pacific Ocean near southeastern Asia subject to frequent typhoons
