What do we need for complete combustion
Plenty of oxygen
What is carbon dioxide
A greenhouse gas. When humans burn fuels and release carbon dioxide it contributes to climate change
What happens to combustion products if the amount of oxygen is reduced
Carbon monoxide is formed rather than carbon dioxide
What is carbon monoxide
A toxic gas with no colour or smell
What do many people have in their homes for carbon monoxide
Carbon monoxide detectors
What are 2 other potnetial products of combustion
Sulfid dioxide
Nitrogen oxide
How is sulfur dioxide gas produced
From combustion of fuels containing sulphur ( for example coal)
Pollution issue of sulfur dioxide
Causes acid rain
How to reduce sulfur dioxide
Flue-gas desulfirisation
What is bad about acid rain
The acid damages lakes and trees and kills wildlife. It also corroded metal and limestone buildings
How is nitrogen oxide formed
From the reaction of nitrogen and oxygen in car engines from the air combine to form nitrogen oxide
Problems of nitrogen oxides
Trigger asthma attacks
Contribute to acid rain
How are carbon particulates formed
Diesel engines burn heavier fuels, and this can lead to some being in burnt. The particulates produced are tiny solid particles containing carbon and unburnt hydrocarbons
What’s bad about carbon particulates
Damage people’s lungs and cause cancer
Cause a haze in the atmosphere, blocking out the suns light and causing global dimming
