Apparatus
Boiling tubes
Boiling tube rack
Measuring cylinder (25 cm3)
Wooden splint
Bunsen burner
Hydrochloric acid (15 cm3)
2cm strip of metal
Method
Measure out 15 cm3 hydrochloric acid using measuring cylinder and add to boiling tube
Add magnesium strip to boiling tube
Ensure it is fully immersed by swirling and allow reaction to proceed for 10 seconds
Light splint and hold it just above mouth of test tube containing
You should hear a squeaky pop (hydrogen)

gas produced with squeaky pop (hydrogen)

solid metal disappears

acid + metal → salt + hydrogen
Error
not fully immersing magnesium or waiting too long
Safety
Safety goggles to protect eyes from splashes of acid
Handle in well-ventilated area/ fume cupboard to avoid inhaling fumes
Caution when handling lit splint to avoid burns
