Apparatus

  • Boiling tubes

  • Boiling tube rack

  • Measuring cylinder (25 cm3)

  • Wooden splint

  • Bunsen burner

  • Hydrochloric acid (15 cm3)

  • 2cm strip of metal

2
New cards

Method

  1. Measure out 15 cm3 hydrochloric acid using measuring cylinder and add to boiling tube

  2. Add magnesium strip to boiling tube

  3. Ensure it is fully immersed by swirling and allow reaction to proceed for 10 seconds

  4. Light splint and hold it just above mouth of test tube containing

  5. You should hear a squeaky pop (hydrogen)

Observations

  • gas produced with squeaky pop (hydrogen)

  • heat produced

  • solid metal disappears

  • colourless solution forms

4
New cards

Equation

acid + metal → salt + hydrogen

5
New cards

Error

not fully immersing magnesium or waiting too long

Safety

  • Safety goggles to protect eyes from splashes of acid

  • Handle in well-ventilated area/ fume cupboard to avoid inhaling fumes

  • Caution when handling lit splint to avoid burns
