What are the four main stressor categories identified in Unit 1 for coping with change?
Physical, Emotional, Social, and Environmental stressors.
Define eustress.
Positive, good stress that motivates and energizes.
Define distress.
Negative stress that occurs when stress levels exceed coping abilities and can harm health.
Differentiate signs of stress from symptoms of stress.
Signs are measurable indicators (e.g., rapid heartbeat); symptoms are personal experiences (e.g., headaches, worry).

What is the difference between intrapersonal and interpersonal conflict?
Interpersonal is conflict between people; intrapersonal is conflict within yourself.
What is the purpose of 'map the conflict' in conflict resolution?
To outline what the conflict is about: who did what, what happened, how people feel, and the ideal outcome.
How is assertiveness defined in conflict resolution?
Communicating needs clearly and politely to seek a fair solution, avoiding aggression and passivity.
What is a personal lifestyle plan?
A plan to live a healthy, balanced life to promote quality of life.
What does SMART stand for in goal setting?
Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timely.
What are rites of passage and their purpose?
Rites marking transitions in the life cycle to help people cope with change and assume new social roles.
Give two examples of rites of passage mentioned in the notes.
IsiXhosa male initiation (ubukhwenkwe); IsiZulu reed dance; Jewish bar/bat mitzvah.
What is the NSC and why is it important?
National Senior Certificate; key to access higher education and jobs; signals readiness and learning ability.
What is School Based Assessment (SBA) and how much does it contribute to the final mark?
SBA includes formal tasks throughout the year and counts 25% of the final Grade 12 mark.
How do mission statements differ from visions?
A mission statement is a practical, near-term guide; a vision is a long-term dream for the future.
What is the role of the media in a democracy?
To inform, educate, expose rights violations, promote debate, and provide fair, reliable reporting.
What are the limits to freedom of expression?
Limitations include propaganda for war, incitement of violence, and hate speech; privacy and public interest considerations also apply.
Name two reasons for youth unemployment in South Africa.
Employers prefer experienced workers; youth lack information on bursaries/learnerships and job-search skills.
What is the 'cycle of unemployment'?
A repeating pattern where unemployment leads to poverty and reduced demand, causing more unemployment.
What is Right2Know and its aim?
A campaign to ensure access to information and media freedom; promote transparency and information rights.
