Antiphonal
A type of writing where one section of voices or instruments plays back and forth with one another
Pipe Organ
A keyboard instrument operated by the player’s hands and feet. It consists of a series of pipes standing on a wind chest.
Chorale
A hymn tune of the german protestant church, often used as a basis for cantata or organ compositions.
Aria
A tuneful for the voice. Showy and expressive. Recitative and Aria are often coupled together.
Cantata
An extended choral work consisting of a number of movements, such as solo recitative and arias, duets, and choruses. On a smaller scale than an oratorio.
Recitative
A vocal style designed to emphasize natural speech patterns. Serves to get across the text and move the story along.
Patronage
Support for the arts paid for and controlled by the church.
Oratorio
A large composition for choir, soloists, and orchestra. Tells an epic story. Grand in scale. Different from opera as there are no costumes and scenery.
