Columbian Exchange
The trade system that moved crops, animals, and diseases between the Old World and the New World.

A forced labor system developed by the Spanish that required American Indians to work on plantations.

A staple crop cultivated by American Indians that allowed for more sedentary lifestyles.

Mercantilism
An economic system where countries tried to increase their wealth through government control of all aspects of trade.

The belief that Americans were destined to expand the United States from coast to coast.

A native-born person or group that opposes immigrants.
Judicial Review
The ability of the Supreme Court to determine whether a law is constitutional.

A series of religious revivals in the early 1800s that focused on personal religious experience.
Great Society
A program developed under President Lyndon Johnson aimed at eliminating poverty and racial injustice.
Brown v. Board of Education
The Supreme Court decision that desegregated public schools.
Civil Rights Act of 1964
Legislation that ended segregation and banned employment discrimination.
Progressive Era
A period of widespread social activism and political reform in the United States from the 1890s to the 1920s.
Gilded Age
A term describing the late 19th century characterized by rapid economic growth but also social problems.
Reconstruction
The period after the Civil War during which the government tried to address the inequalities of slavery and its political, social, and economic legacy.
Fugitive Slave Law
A law that made it a crime for anyone to assist runaway slaves and required them to be returned to their masters.
