Use the concept of electronegativity to justify why the acid strengths of ethanedioic acid and ethanoic acid are different.
Stage 1:
-acids are of the form RCOOH but in ethanol acid R= CH3
Stage 2
-the unionised COOH group contains two very electronegative atoms therefore has a negative inductive effect
Stage 3
-The O-H bond in the ethanedioc acid is more polarised so more dissociation into H+. Ethandioic acid is stronger than ethanoicacid
