Elie Wiesel

Elie's father. He is arrested along with his son and imprisoned, where he dies.

Shlomo Wiesel

he tells terrifying tales of the concentration camps which the villagers find hard to believe.

Moishe the Beadle

Elie's mother. She is a loving person who cares for her family and who works to infuse courage.

Mrs. Wiesel

Elie's oldest sister. She is also deported to a concentration camp and manages to survive.

hilda

Elie's older sister, who is the second child in the family. She also manages to survive.

bea

elie's younger sister, who does not survive the concentration camp.

tzipora

A relative of Elie, he is worried about his wife and sons. Elie lies to cheer him up.

Stein of Antwerp

a fifty year old deportee who has visions of "fire and furnace" while traveling on the train.

Madame Schachter

A singer who has strong faith; he dies in camp after losing hope; no one prays Kaddish for him.

Akiba Drumer

A polish musician who plays violin. He plays Beethoven at Gleiwitz and dies the next day.

A former student. When Elie's refuses to give his gold tooth he tortures Elie's father.

Czech brothers whose parents were killed. They work in the electrical warehouse.

Yossi and Tibi

A thirteen year old boy who looks angelic. He is an assistant to the Dutch Oberkapo.

A survivalist. He leaves his father behind to save himself.

He helps to free Elie from an attacker on the train to Gleiwitz but is overcome by grief.

Meir Katz

A violent Kapo in the Buna warehouse. He lashes Elie because Elie saw him with a woman.
