Empirical Formula
The simplest whole-number ratio of atoms of each element in a compound.
Molecular Formula
A formula that shows the actual number of atoms of each element in a molecule of the compound.
Adipic Acid
A compound with the formula C6H10O4, commonly used in the production of nylon.
Learning Check
Exercises used to assess understanding of material; in this case, to determine empirical and molecular formulas.
Caffeine
A stimulant found in coffee and tea, with the molecular formula C8H10N4O2.
Percent Composition
The percent by mass of each element in a compound, used to determine empirical formulas.
Molar Mass
The mass of one mole of a substance, typically expressed in grams per mole (g/mol).
