Microscope
An instrument used to see objects that are too small for the naked eye.
Total Magnification
multiplying the ocular lens magnification by the objective lens magnification.
Inverted Image
An image that is turned upside down and reversed from left to right.
Lens Paper
Specialized paper used to clean the lenses of microscopes without scratching them.
3D Observation
see depth and dimension in an object using microscopy.
Ocular Lens
eyepiece lens of a microscope through which the specimen is viewed.
Objective Lens
lens or lenses on a microscope that are closest to the specimen and provide varying levels of magnification.
Specimen Orientation
The positioning and direction of a specimen being viewed under a microscope.
Focus Microscopy
The process of adjusting the focus of a microscope to see a clear image.
Living Cells
Cells that are currently functioning, as opposed to dead or preserved cells.
Types of microscopes
dissecting, compound, inverted
dissecting microscope
used for larger objects, 3D
compound microscopes
used for very small thing, has higher magnification
inverted microscope
for petri dish (liquid), and living cells
how should you hold a microscope
carry using 2 hands, 1 under base and 1 on arm
how to clean microscope lens
use only lens paper
how to focus microscope
start on lowest magnification, focus on object, increase magnification
clean/store microscope
first use lens paper to clean, then store scope w cord wrapped around base, and scanning objective in place, and stage fully lowered
total magnification
ocular lens x objective lens
orientation of specimen
images appear upside down & opposite
direction
To move must moves slide in opposite
direction to what is shown
