Cornea
transparent “window” on the rostral surface that admits light to the interior of the eye
Extraocular Muscles
attaches to the sclera of the eye inside the bony orbit. Holds the eyeball steady and produces delicate and accurate eye movements
Optic Nerve
Carries the visual impulses from the eye to the optic chiasm
limbus
area where the sclera and cornea meet
Sclera
white of the eye
Iris
colored portion of the eye
Pupil
opening or hole in the center of the iris through which light passes
Ciliary body
ring shaped structure that controls the shape of the lens. Located just behind the iris but still in the rostral part of the eye
suspensory ligaments
dark material surrounding the lens
Choroid
middle, vascular layer of the eye, between the retina and the sclera. contains dark pigment and blood vessels that supply the retina
retina
the light sensitive inner surface of the eye, containing the receptor rods and cones plus layers of neurons that being the processing of visual information. lies against the choroid, lining the back of the eye
Tapetum
A reflective layer of the choroid in the eyes of many animals, causing them to shine in the dark
Optic disc
region at the back of the eye where the optic nerve meets the retina. It is the blind spot of the eye because it contains only nerve fibers, no rods or cones, and is sensitive to light
lens
the transparent structure behind the pupil that changes shapes to help focus images on the retina
Vitreous Humor
jelly like substance found behind the lens in the posterior cavity of the eye that helps maintain its shape
aqueous humor
the clear fluid filling the space in the front of the eyeball between the lens and the cornea
