Energy Balance
The difference between energy intake and energy expenditure.
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)
The amount of energy required to carry out essential physiological functions while the body is at rest.
Diet-Induced Thermogenesis (DIT)
The increase in energy expenditure above baseline after eating, involving digestion and absorption of nutrients.
Physical Activity Energy Expenditure (PAEE)
The amount of energy utilized during structured exercise and other physical activities.
Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT)
The calories spent in relation to all physical activities other than structured exercise.
Resting Energy Expenditure (REE)
The energy expenditure measured while a person is at rest, synonymous with BMR.
Thermic Effect of Food (TEF)
The energy required for digestion, absorption, and metabolism of food.
Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)
The energy expenditure of a person at rest, typically measured under sleeping or fasting conditions.
Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE)
The total amount of energy required for maintaining body weight, supporting physiological functions, and daily activities.
Indirect Calorimetry
A method to estimate energy expenditure based on oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production.
