What is direct characterization?
Direct characterization occurs when the author directly tells the reader something about the character.
What are the five methods of indirect characterization (STEAL)?
Speech, Thoughts, Effect on Others, Actions, Looks.
What is a protagonist?
The main character that is trying to achieve a goal. Not always morally correct
What defines a flat character?
A character with only one trait, one-sided, and no depth.
What is the difference between external and internal conflict?
External conflict occurs outside the body (e.g., Man vs. Man), while internal conflict takes place within a character's mind or body (e.g., Man vs. Self).
What is setting in literature?
Setting includes the time, place, atmosphere, and mood of the story.
What is figurative language?
Language that uses figures of speech, such as similes, metaphors, and personification.
What is verbal irony?
A contrast between what is said and what is meant, often used as sarcasm.
What is symbolism?
A concrete object that stands for an abstract idea, such as the U.S. Flag representing freedom.
What is the theme of a story?
The main idea or message that the author wants to communicate to the reader.
