What is the fuel system on the C172S

Gravity fed

2 tanks, 53 useable, 56 unuseable

13 fuel sumps, 5 per wing, 3 under the belly

6
New cards

What is unuseable fuel?

Fuel that sits at the bottom of the tank that cant be used

Collects dirt, debree, water (1.5 gal each tank)

7
New cards

Fuel injection system (Engine driven fuel pump, fuel air control unit, fuel manifold)?

Engine-driven fuel pump - provides fuel pressure and is the primary fuel pump (there are more than one)

Fuel air control unit - replaces carb, proportions fuel flow to induction air flow

Fuel manifold - distributes fuel to discharge nozzles

8
New cards

Fuel injection system (Fuel discharge nozzle, aux fuel pump)

Fuel discharge nozzle - injects fuel directly into cylinders, fuel/air mix in cylinders

Aux fuel pump - electric pump, used for priming, engine failures, vapor lock

9
New cards

Electrical system

24 V Battery

28 V Alternator

60 Amp belt driven alternator - alt belt attached to prop

24.5 V to 28 V

10
New cards

Master switch

Power ignition system, clock, hobbs time

ALT on left, BAT on right due to alphabet order

11
New cards

What are the positives and negatives of fuel injection

Pos - More complete burn, No carb ice

Neg - Vapor lock - use aux fuel pump, More parts and expensive

12
New cards

If the electrical system fails

30min before going dark

13
New cards

Ammeter

Indicates amount of current from ALT to BAT

If ALT fails ammeter will show a discharge

14
New cards

What are the key voltages in the electrical system

32 - Overvoltage
28 - 24.5 - Normal V
24.5 - Low V annunciation
20 - Standby battery empty

15
New cards

Low voltage and Overvoltage

Low voltage - Activates below 24.5V, ALT is not supplying enough power to system

Overvoltage - Trips ALT once voltage exceeds 32V, pops circuit breaker

16
New cards

How many busses are in the electrical system?

6

Electrical Bus 1+2
Avionics Bus 1+2
Crossfeed Bus
Essential Bus

17
New cards

What is the purpose of the standby battery

Use in case of failure of charging system or main battery running out of power

After main battery depleted STBY will turn on if in ARM mode

18
New cards

What are the parts of the Essential Bus

PFD, ADC, AHRS, GEA

Comm 1, Nav 1, Standby battery, standby indicator lights

19
New cards

Oil System

Total 9qts

Sumps 8qts

KSU SOPs min 5qts

20
New cards

Vacuum System

Engine-driven vacuum pump

Operates standby attitude indicator

“Low vac” - Below 3.5”

“Normal” - 4.5” to 5.5”

21
New cards

What is the most common reason for an engine failure?

Fuel starvation

22
New cards

What is the range for Va on the C172S?

90-105

23
New cards

What is the max ramp weight? Max T/O and landing weight?

Max ramp weight - 2558

Max T/O weight - 2550

24
New cards

Where is the magnometer on the C172S

On the left wing

25
New cards

What color is the low vac annunciator and where is it?

Yellow on the PFD

26
New cards

If you hold the flip flop button on the G1000 what will happen?

121.5 is inserted

27
New cards

How many fuel vents are there?

3 fuel vents, 2 in the caps and one on the wing

28
New cards

What would happen with detonation if you increase the octane?

Detonation occurrence decreases

29
New cards

If you have PFD failure will it automatically switch screens for you?

Yes

30
New cards

What do the three sumps under the belly pull fuel from?

Strainer, reservoir, selector

31
New cards

What uses the most electrical power in the aircraft?

Radio transmissions

32
New cards

What are the sections of a POH?

General
Limitations
Emergency procedure
Normal procedures
Performance
Weight and balance
Aircraft systems
Service
Supplements

33
New cards

What is the difference between a servo and anti servo tab?

Servo tab - Cessna, goes in the same direction as the control surface

Anti servo tab - Piper, goes in the opposite direction of the control surface, prevents overcontrolling

34
New cards

What type of ailerons are on the C172?

Freeze type ailerons

37
New cards

In the event that the main air intake on the 172 closes what happens?

The alternate air intake on the 172 open automatically

38
New cards

What is the purpose of static wicks on the aircraft?

As the aircraft flies static electricity comes from the friction between dust, snow and rain, (transfer of electrons) or in a TS

When the static charge reached a high enough level it discharges at sharp points on the aircraft. hissing or crackling sounds can occur and blue light can be seen

Static wicks provide a path for the static electricity to dissipate minimizing the size of the corona discharge

39
New cards

What is the effect of the corona discharge

Loss of VHF communication

Erroneous magnetic compass readings

High pitched audio squeeling

St. Elmo’s fire
