What is an adjective?
A word that describes a noun or pronoun.
What questions do adjectives answer?
Which one? What kind? How many?
What is a predicate adjective?
An adjective after a linking verb that describes the subject.
What are the three articles?
A, An, The — they’re adjectives.
What are the three degrees of adjectives?
Positive, Comparative, Superlative.
Comparative vs. Superlative adjectives
Comparative = compares two; Superlative = compares three or more.
What do adverbs describe?
Verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.
What questions do adverbs answer?
How? When? Where? To what extent?
What are the four types of adverbs?
Time, Place, Manner, Degree.
What adverbs of time tell
When or how often something happens.
What adverbs of place tell
Where something happens.
What adverbs of manner tell
How something happens.
What adverbs of degree tell
To what extent something happens.
Example of an adverb modifying an adjective
“Extremely hot” → extremely modifies hot.
Example of an adverb modifying another adverb
“Very softly” → very modifies softly.
How can you spot many adverbs?
Many end in –ly (but not all).
What is a conjunction?
A word that connects words, phrases, or clauses.
What are the three types of conjunctions?
Coordinating, Subordinating, Correlative.
What are the coordinating conjunctions? (FANBOYS)
FANBOYS — and, or, nor, so, but, yet, for
What do coordinating conjunctions do?
Connect equal parts (words or independent clauses).
What do subordinating conjunctions do?
Join a dependent clause to an independent clause.
Examples of subordinating conjunctions
Because, although, if, when, since, unless, etc.
What are correlative conjunctions?
Pairs of conjunctions that work together.
Examples of correlative conjunctions
Either/or, neither/nor, both/and, not only/but also.
What is a preposition?
A word that shows the relationship between words.
What does a prepositional phrase include?
The preposition + the object of the preposition.
Example of a prepositional phrase
“Under the table.”
What does a preposition show?
Where, when, or how things are related.
Key rule about prepositions
A preposition must be part of a phrase — never alone.
Difference between "between" and "among"
Between = two; Among = three or more.
Difference between "beside" and "besides"
Beside = next to; Besides = in addition to.
