Refraction

• the bending of light as it passes obliquely from one optical medium to another of different refractive index.

PRE-REQUISITES FOR REFRACTION

• There must be light.

• The light must strike the surface obliquely.

• There must be at least 2 optical media.

• The optical media must have different refractive indices.

ABSOLUTE REFRACTIVE INDEX

• The ratio of the velocity of light in vacuum to the velocity of light in another medium.

• The refractive index of a medium with respect to vacuum.

RELATIVE REFRACTIVE INDEX

• The ratio of the velocity of light in the first medium to the velocity of light in the second medium.

• The ratio of the absolute refractive index of the 2nd medium to that of the 1st.
