Refraction
the bending of light as it passes obliquely from one optical medium to another of different refractive index.
PRE-REQUISITES FOR REFRACTION
There must be light.
The light must strike the surface obliquely.
There must be at least 2 optical media.
The optical media must have different refractive indices.
REFRACTIVE INDEX or INDEX OF REFRACTION
The ratio of the velocity of light in a given pair of media
Absolute Refractive Index
Relative Refractive Index
2 TYPES OF REFRACTIVE INDEX
ABSOLUTE REFRACTIVE INDEX
The ratio of the velocity of light in vacuum to the velocity of light in another medium.
The refractive index of a medium with respect to vacuum.
RELATIVE REFRACTIVE INDEX
The ratio of the velocity of light in the first medium to the velocity of light in the second medium.
The ratio of the absolute refractive index of the 2nd medium to that of the 1st.
