Sleep
A state of reduced awareness of surroundings.
EEG
Machine used to measure stages of sleep.
Alpha waves
Brain waves experienced at the onset of sleep.
Theta Waves
Brain waves produced during Stage 1 sleep.
Sleep spindles
Short bursts of rapid brain waves during Stage 2 sleep.
Delta waves
Slow brain waves produced during deep sleep (Stage 3).
Twilight State
Relaxed state just before falling asleep.
REM sleep
Rapid Eye Movement sleep; brain is very active, dreams occur, body is paralyzed.
REM Rebound
Increased intensity of REM sleep after sleep deprivation.
Night terror
Horrible dream occurring during NREM sleep.
Insomnia
Persistent problems falling asleep.
Narcolepsy
Unpredictable sleep attacks, falling directly into REM sleep due to lack of orexin.
Sleep Apnea
A person stops breathing during sleep.
Somnambulism
Sleep walking, often occurs during stage 4 sleep.

Latent Content
The underlying meaning of a dream according to Freud.
Activation-Synthesis Theory
Theory that the cerebral cortex tries to interpret random electrical activity during sleep.
Information-Processing Theory
Theory that dreams are a way to deal with daily stresses.
Hypnosis
Altered state of consciousness.
Posthypnotic suggestion
Suggestion made during hypnosis that is carried out after.
Posthypnotic amnesia
Forgetting what happened during hypnosis.
Drug Tolerance
The diminishing effect with regular dose of the same dose.
Withdrawal Symptoms
Symptoms that occur when you stop using a drug.
Stimulants
Drugs that speed up body processes.
Depressants
Drugs that slow down body processes.
Hallucinogens
Drugs that cause hallucinations.
Opiates
Drug with depressive and hallucinogenic qualities, agonist for endorphins, derived from the poppy plant.
