Social Groups
a collection of people who share something in common and who believe that what they have in common is significant
aggregate
a set of individuals who happen to be in the same place at the same time
categories
consists of one particular kind of person across time and space. Sets of people who share similar charecteristics
primary groups
small tightly knit bound by a very strong sense of belonging aka family and friends
secondary groups
large and impersonal groups whose members bound by a shared goal or activity aka a company
voluntary groups
a group you choose to join
involuntary groups
membership assigned aka prisoners and people in the army
leader
someone who influences there group
instrumental leader
focused on groups goals giving orders and making plans in order to achieve there goals
expressive leader
looking to increase harmony and minimize conflict
authoritarian leaders
lead by giving orders and setting down rules which they expect the group to follow.
democratic leaders
lead by trying to reach a consensus instead of issuing orders. they consider all viewpoints to try and reach a decision
laissaez fair leaders
they’re extremely permissive and mostly leave the group on its own to function
group conformity
the tendency for individuals to change their attitudes, beliefs, or behaviors to match those of a group
groupthink
narrowing of thought in a group by which its members come to believe that there is one possible answer
reference groups
groups we use as standards to judge ourselves and others. What’s normal for you is determined partly by your reference groups
