Neurotic Personality

• Chronic distress without any organic apparent cause 

• conflicts between the id, ego, and superego

• superego is present

• anxiety, depression, or OCD

• Defense mechanisms

  • Repression, denial, projection, rationalization, displacement, intellectualization, and regression

Neurotic Personality Disorders

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

• Anxiety that does not trace back to any 1 identifiable source 

OCD

• Intrusive and unwanted thoughts that prompt repetitive behavior aimed at reducing anxieties 

Hysteria 

• Used for women 

• Conversion disorder and dissociative disorder are similar

*Wont see term (Neurotic) in a diagnosis 

Perverse Personality

• pervert

• Intense or unusual sexual desires or practices 

  • Varies across cultures and time periods 

• stemmed from childhood events or complications 

• impulse disorders, used to get out of jail

• NO superego

Perverse Personality Disorders

Antisocial Personality Disorder 

• disregard for the rights of other people

• All psychopaths = antisocial

• not all people who have antisocial are psychopaths 

Paraphilic disorders 

• Exhibitionistic, frotteuristic, pedophilic, machochism, sadism, fetishistic, voyeristic 

• Must last 6 months and impair social relationships  

Psychopaths 

• Colloquially, not in DSM-5

Psychotic Personality

• Psychosis 

• Loss of contact with reality 

  • Hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking

• Neurosis is less severe than psychosis 

• Think the world is out to get them, Id

• Treated with Psychoanalysis

• Loss of reality

• Hallucinations, hearing voices, impaired social functioning 

Bipolar Disorder (BPD)

• intense emotions and instability
