Word Equation
A method to describe a chemical reaction using names of reactants and products.
Skeletal Chemical Equation
An equation that shows the reactants and products but is not balanced.
Balanced Chemical Equation
An equation that has the same number of each type of atom on both sides.
Combination Reaction
A reaction where two or more substances combine to form a single product.
Decomposition Reaction
A reaction where a single substance breaks down to form two or more products.
Displacement Reaction
A reaction in which one element displaces another from its compound.
Double Displacement Reaction
A reaction where two compounds exchange ions to form two new compounds.
Exothermic Reaction
A reaction that releases heat to the surroundings.
Endothermic Reaction
A reaction that absorbs heat from the surroundings.
Oxidation
The process of gaining oxygen or losing hydrogen in a reaction.
Reduction
The process of losing oxygen or gaining hydrogen in a reaction.
Precipitation Reaction
A reaction that produces an insoluble substance, forming a precipitate.
Corrosion
The deterioration of metals due to chemical reactions with the environment.
Rancidity
