What was Khrushchev's background?

He was born in 1874 and died in 1971, he was Ukrainian and had a worker-peasant background. He became a political commissar with the Red Army during the Civil War.

He was a leading Stalinist from the mid-1920s, he sponsored a variety of reforms.

He was deposed by Brezhnev in October 1964.

Destalinisation- secret speech in February 1956.

What was 'Communism by 1980?'

Khrushchev said this in a speech in October 1961, he wanted to beat the Americans by avoiding conflict, and by 1980 the Soviets could win the Cold War. The Soviets could focus on economic growth and obtaining more nuclear weapons. From 1959-60, 5.9% of the Soviet economy was growing each year.
