exceptions to mendelian inheritance
incomplete dominance, codominance, epistasis, poygenic inheritance, linkage
incomplete dominance
two versions of dominant alleles for a certain gene, which can be passed down to combine (ie pink flowers)
codominance
both alleles of a gene can be expressed simultaneously (ie blood type: two types of carbohydrates on red blood cell exterior)
Epistasis
multiple genes interact to produce a phenotype (ie pigment gene and pigment protein gene)
polygenic inheritance
a large variety of genes affect a phenotype (ie height controlled by 180 genes)
multifactorial
influenced by environmental factors as well as genes (ie hydrangea color influenced by pH of soil)
linkage
two genes on the same chromosome tend to be inherited together: linkage increases with proximity of loci on chromosome
recombinant frequency
percentage of the time where crossing over separates linked genes, leading to new combinations of alleles
